Winding Provisional Cast On

With this type of cast on you can keep your cast on stitches live to easily be picked up again at a later time. This technique gives you a seamless transition. It's also perfect for knits that need to be reversible - so it looks great from both sides.

Casting On

Make a slipknot with the beginning of your yarn.

Place it on the first circular needle and tighten it.

Place a second circular needle of the same size directly on top of the first.

Hold the knot in place with your fingers and begin wrapping the yarn from front to back over both needles.

Wrap the yarn around both needles in this way as many times as you need stitches. Do not count the initial knot as a stitch.

Then hold the stitches in place with your finger and turn your needles to the other side. The working yarn will now be on the back.

Pull the lower circular needle through the stitches so they hang on the cable.

Start knitting all stitches according to your pattern.
Make sure to start knitting with the upper needle and don’t mix them up.

Leave the slipknot closed at the end. It secures the stitches so they don't come undone.

After a few rows, you can place the stitches on the lower circular needle onto a stitch holder or scrap yarn.

Later, you can easily pick them up again to continue knitting. Open the slipknot at the end to weave in the yarn tail.
